The I Ching (pronounced 'ee-ching'),also known as The Book of Changes,is thought to be the oldest of the Chinese classic texts. The I Ching describes a philosophy that centers on the idea of yin/yang or balance through opposites and the idea of acceptance of change.

In the Chinese language, "ching" means book. "I" means change, or changes. It also means permanence or unchangeable. The Book of Changes views all change as an unfolding of the unchangable laws and principles of the universe. By explaining our present situation in terms of natural laws, we can know where we are headed and what the future is likely to be.

The I Ching consists of 64 hexagrams. Sixty-four is the number of possible combinations of pairs of six broken or unbroken lines called trigrams. The lines represent the principles of yin (the broken lines) and yang (the unbroken lines). The trigrams represent heaven, earth, thunder, water, mountain, wind, fire, and lake. The sixty-four hexagrams each have a particular meaning. Age-old traditions describe the images through the medium of imaginative verse that help the intuitive and psychic personality to disclose the underlying themes.

I ching is thought to be an oracle that produces responses to questions and problems. This ancient divination system is an intricate numerically-based oracle.The traditional method of consulting the oracle is to divide 50 yarrow stalks in a complex manner described in the Wilhelm translation of the I Ching. In modern times the oracle is consulted by means of tossing numbered coins and adding the numbers to determine the hexagram.
