Animals and the Afterlife
My sweet kitty left me this past Saturday evening after having some kind of neurological event in the early hours of New Years Day. Her veterinarian felt that the symptoms she had most likely were the result of a meningioma (brain tumor).
Other than routine lab work and IV fluids for dehydration, I decided against further diagnostic tests and surgery to remove the meningioma. My kitty was twenty years old and not an ideal surgical candidate. I took her home and tried to keep her as comfortable for the remainder of her days.
Although I have three other loving pets in my home, I miss my kitty terribly. She was a part of my life and gave me unconditional love for twenty years! I have to wonder, "Is there an afterlife for animals? Will I ever see or communicate with her again?"
Yesterday I was channel surfing and happened upon a discussion about this topic on Naomi's New Morning. Kim Sheridan, a guest on Naomi's show, is the author of Animals and the Afterlife.

My 16 year old little dog was acting funny for a couple days..walking around in circles...among other things..I took her to the Humane Society where I live ..who by the way are wonderful..To make this short, they put her to sleep...she was leaving me..As I held her I actually sensed and felt her soul leave her body! I went out for a couple hours before going home; it felt strange for her not to be there..As I walked down the hall way toward my bedroom I smelled the pet shampoo so strong and vividly as I stopped in my bedroom door way! I told her ..Goodbye..that I knew she was telling me she was around and wanted to say goodbye..By, the way, the pet shampoo I smelled I had not used on her in at least 6 months and had none in the house at the time!

Thank you for sharing the story of how your little dog said 'goodbye' with the scent of her shampoo.
Approximately eight months after my original post about my kitty, another beloved pet left me.
I had a similar experience as you -- feeling my dog's soul leave his body. It was my intention to have him put to sleep. But fate intervened and I had to bring him home to spend his last hours on my bed where he always slept. My hand was on his chest to comfort him as his breathing became more labored.
I felt his last breath and his soul leaving his body.
I am sorry for your loss, but am glad your little dog stayed around long enough to tell you she was saying good bye.
