Although I can't find it on their web site now, I think I was first exposed to
salt lamp
on QVC. At the time I didn't think much about the lamp. But lately I've seen salt lamps being sold on various sites on the internet. What's so special about a
salt lamp
? Is it just the latest fad?
According to several sources , a salt lamp is carved from Himalayan salt crystal that was formed by the earth over 250 Million years ago. As ancient oceans dried up because of climate change, this salt is what was left over. Over the years, intense heat and pressure from tectonic plates shifting caused the Himalayan salt to crystallize. Unlike table salt, Himalayan salt contains all 84 elements which comprise the human body and has been found to improve wellness and bodily functions with regular use.
Himalayan salt crystal is believed to emit negatively charged ions like those produced by ionizers seen on TV. But unlike the man-made ionizer, salt lamps do not produce Ozone which can have a negative effect on our health.
Many people are aware of the health benefits of negative ions. Negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the chemical serotonin in our body, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.
The freshness of the air after a thunderstorm or by the ocean is due to the high concentration of negative ions in the air. On the other hand, an unduly low negative ion noted is noted in highly polluted areas containing cars, factory smog, air conditioned rooms, or when hot dry wind conditions exist. Rock Salt Lamps may counteract the effects of indoor pollutants by emitting negative ions. Thus the air quality is improved, and a healthy, relaxing, atmosphere is felt as the effects of stress, artificial light and air conditioning are neutralized.
